The End Malaria Council officially launched a buy a Bicycle campaign on 28th September 2023. This is in response to the request from the Ministry of Health, through the National Malaria Elimination Centre (NMEC) for this support. The launch was hosted by the Engineering Institution (EIZ) of Zambia in Lusaka.
Early in the year, NMEC presented gaps to the EMC and among them was for mobilising 18,600 bicycles for CHWs who the front-line volunteers are fighting malaria. The bicycles are intended to cover all eligible CHWs across the country.
The EMC and EMF Board members participated in the launch which was combined with the third quarter Board meeting. The event was also attended by the ministry of health (NMEC), USAID-PMI, PATH – MACEPA and the media.
At the event the EMC received commitments from the host (EIZ), Bankers Association of Zambia, World Bicycle Relief, while some individual Board members also made donations as others pledged.
NMEC also had a malaria testing and information desk at which attendees had an opportunity to learn more about various malaria elimination interventions and to understand the work of CHWs, the malaria commodities (kit) and other enablers. EMC called for the need to support such volunteers.
At the same event, the EMC officially handed over 1,900 registers for MDA being implemented in 6 districts across the country. The registers were procured by the EMC upon receiving the request from NMEC.
